If you and your proposed fiance want to get married, and one of you got divorced in a foreign jurisdiction, you must get an Ontario lawyer to do an opinion as to the validity of that foreign divorce.
Normally Guy Hunter charges a flat fee $400 plus HST ($452.00 with HST) for these foreign divorce opinions, if the matter is straightforward.
If you need a foreign divorce opinion you should bring an original (or if none are available, the best copy you have of the) foreign divorce order to your meeting with Mr. Hunter.
If the Divorce Order is not in English or French, an official translation of the foreign divorce document and any related court documents should be done. Guy Hunter, although competent to provide a foreign divorce opinion to clients whose first language is French or Spanish, is not licensed to do official translations of foreign Court documents in either language.
The person who is divorced in the foreign jurisdiction should come to Mr. Hunter’s office and explain where they got divorced and where they were living at the time of the divorce. In most cases, Mr. Hunter can provide a foreign divorce opinion in less than one week from the date of your meeting with him.
